CANADA DANCE FESTIVAL SOCIETY MANDATE

The Canada Dance Festival Society is a presenter of contemporary Canadian dance, a partner and a community player that facilitates the development of the art form, its artists and its appreciative audience

As a national organization that presents live dance performances by professional Canadian artists, all activities are programmed with sensitivity to regional considerations, cultural diversity and audience development.

The Society’s signature activity is a biennial celebration of Canadian dance at the Canada Dance Festival. It takes place in Ottawa during even-numbered years, with the National Arts Centre as co-producer. Over 5-7 days, 200-300 artists from across the country participate in 30-50 performances that include several commissioned works and world premieres. As a national showcase, it attracts close to 60 Canadian and foreign presenters who attend the festival to follow the developments in Canadian dance and to select artists for their respective festivals and dance series. The biennial Canada Dance Festival fosters a healthy and stimulating environment for community networking and exchange. Since the first presentation of the festival in 1987, the CDF has participated in commissioning over 70 original dances and has been the catalyst for countless national and international tours.

The Society also produces a 4-5 day thematic program during the odd-numbered years. This event changes in content to respond to trends in the milieu, develop community partnerships and/or provide opportunities to present artists in a less intensive environment.

The Canada Dance Festival Society is a charitable organization, registration # 13067 5135 RR0001.
